In 2019, fashion brands are still messing up big time when it comes to basic common sense around racial sensitivity. Sadly, Gucci is the latest offender with its Fall/Winter 2018 wool balaclava sweater featuring a half mask that looks a whole lot like blackface.
Gucci claims the $890 sweater was inspired by “vintage ski masks.” (There is nothing vintage about racism.)
After social media outrage, Gucci said it is “learning” from the error in its ways, apologizing and removing from its online and physical stores.
Given the accented red lips to the jet black face covering, we are so confused as to how no one in the design, production or marketing departments saw this as wrong.
