It’s a new day and new
We’re kicking off 2019 with a double cover issue featuring natural hair icon and R&B vet Marsha Ambrosius and rapper-turned-reality tv star-turned-salon owner Yung Joc (well, actually his blue hair and his hairstylist, Deva Pink).
Inside, we chat with Marsha about her recent EP NYLA, her secret to her musical longevity, the joy of Black hair and the one thing she wants her daughter to know about her hair.
“I hope to God that she just knows how beautiful she is and how beautiful these curls are and to be proud of that,” says Marsha of her 2-year-old daughter, Nyla.
Yung Joc‘s blue hair and Usher’s retro conk also inspired a whole wave of conversations around the changing landscape of hair and masculinity. To get some perspective, we chatted it up with Deva, along with Randy Stodghill, who is behind the manes of such faves as Angela Bassett and Sza, and Wade “The Barber” Menendez, who has gained renown for his “man-weaves.”
“In our community,” shares Deva, “we have an expectation of what a man looks like, what a man is supposed to do and is supposed to wear his hair like.”
Hype Hair‘s February 2019 issue will be available online January 31 and in salons, beginning February 7. Get your digital copy here.
