HH: How did you prepare for it?
NP: To prepare, I got to talk to some experts about the investigation process, the criminal justice system and the juvenile detention system, as well as the personal consequences of the job, and what kind of mindset you have to be in before you walk into a crime scene or interrogation. I also watched some documentaries and read a few personal essays to get inside the head of a police officer and a detective, since Heather is transitioning from one to the other.

The biggest thing I’ve learned is that as a woman, you have to be twice as tough—you really can’t show any weakness. They’re waiting on you to fail or get emotional, so you’ve got to be impervious.

HH: What inspires you in life and in your career?
NP:  I love getting to see art, getting to see something larger than myself that inspires awe. Seeing a beautiful sculpture or painting, listening to music or going out by a beauti- ful lake or river…and living! Being with my girlfriends and supporting one another is huge. That feeds my soul.

HH: What is your day-to-day haircare routine, and can you share some of your favorite haircare tips?
NP: I like to keep things varied. My hair is natural, so I like sometimes wearing it out, sometimes doing a protective hairstyle. I’d say the biggest tip is to keep it moisturized and to sleep with a satin bonnet or pillowcase!

HH: What are your current fave hair products?
NP:DevaCurl products do it for me. I also love The Mane Choice.

HH: What are some of your favorite hairstyles to wear for daytime and red carpet looks?
NP: Daytime, I love slicking my hair back with a middle part and sometimes putting a bracelet on the bun to give it a little sparkle. Red carpet, I loved my hair for the NAACP Awards this year. Darico Jackson really made me look amazing!

HH: Who are some of your favorite hairspirations?
NP: Pam Grier and Diana Ross are everything to me. They had so many looks, but their spirit and ability to inhabit their characters gave their hair the extra something to make it shine.

HH: What are some of your favorite makeup products to use when you want to glam it up and when you want a simple, more natural look?
NP: I use Fenty concealer sticks for both. I love the Suede shade, for me, to cover little imperfections and the Truffle shade to contour when I have to punch it up.

HH: What is your skincare routine and what products do you love?
NP: I love the Glossier cleanser, Mario Badescu cucumber toner and drying mask for pimples… and the Embroylisse moisturizer. I just started using the vitamin C serum from Drunk Elephant. But it’s always: cleanse, tone, moisturize. And drink water!
