Cardi B is set on a fast course to become one of hip-hop’s fashion icons. She’s leveled up considerably since first hitting the scene — came through dripping for fashion week. Now, she’s serving up glamour queen vibes in a stunning shoot lensed by famed photographer Mickalene Thomas for W‘s Art Issue.
For the old Hollywood-inspired shoot, Cardi channels Latina glamour queens such as Maria Montez, Chelo Alonso, and Rita Moreno.
“They were all powerful women who claimed a space for themselves, in an industry that wasn’t exactly inclusionary,” said Mickalene who frequently draws up collage-based paintings, art history and popular culture to explore Black female sexuality and power.
Mickalene said she wanted to take Cardi B out of her stylistic box. “On many levels, she portrays herself through a male gaze,” she said. “I wanted to see if she could transform herself and go beyond the prescribed notion that’s expected within an industry that wants to only perceive and present you as one dimensional.”
Cardi took page out of Beyoncé’s playbook and pushed to use her own styling team. Her go-stylist Kollin Carter, who kept her turning heads all fashion month long, helped drape her in a smorgasbord of couture looks while Tokyo Stylez worked his hair magic and Ericka La Pearl gave her a bronzy glow.
