Tracee Ellis Ross gave us beachy vibes with a vibrant lewk on the Emmys red carpet. The actress posed it up in a voluminous fuchsia Valentino gown paired with a slicked back bun styled by Johnnie Sapong.

“The idea was to able to be able to take the high couture nature of the gown [and] to create something very chic with the hair that still feels effortless,” said Johnnie.

And, of course, he showed us that a simple bun is never as simple as we think!

To get the look, Johnnie prepped her hair using Suave Professionals Almond + Shea Butter Moisturizing Conditioner as a leave-in conditioner follow by a bit of Suave Professionals Captivating Curls Mousse Cream to help moisturize and define her curls. He then used a diffused to blow her hair out and create some curl volume.

Once dry, he pulled the hair into a high pony.  The secret to the look, he said was in the play on her natural curl pattern. “I made sure to create an element of texture by sleeking [the edges] using the fingers,” said Johnnie.

He also played on the texture in her ponytail. “I used a micro-curling iron on the ponytail by taking sections out, because I was trying to work with the natural texture,” he shared. “This step was only to accentuate that natural definition, while still aiming for that fresh off the shower look.”

After the curls set, he twisted Tracee’s hair into a high bun on the crown and secured with hair pins. He finished off the look with Suave Professionals Natural Hold Micro Mist Hairspray “to tame the flyaways.”
