It’s upfronts week for Sonequa Martin-Green and she is giving us natural hair life with her latest ‘do. While prepping for season two of Star Trek: Discovery, the beauty showed off what might be her best buzzed look thus far on Wednesday at the 2018 CBS Upfront in NYC.

The beauty was perched and pretty in an etched and tapered twist-out styled by celeb stylist Monae Everett for the media day. We caught up with the stylist to get all the deets on how to recreate the look.

“Sonequa is coming from a shaved side look from her role in Star Trek. It has a nice design with multiple lengths throughout the cut. “I wanted to play that up, while giving it some height.” she said.

To achieve the twist-out look, Monae used a fine tooth rattail to create comb twist-outs along the sides and set them and did the same for the middle layer. “I used Ouidad custard and soufflé for the side twists,” she said. “I love their kinky curls hair line — it gives great definition without flaking. And, it has great hold and shine and it really makes the curls pop.”

For Sonequa’s longer crown layer, which Monae estimated to be about four or five inches on top, she did a dry twist-out using Mizani Styling Foam Wrap ($17) and Aquage Beyond Shine ($20) to style it. “I did a dry-twist-out which helped cut down on drying time as well as cut down on frizz. The tip is to part one-inch sections and to twist and lay the them in the opposite direction that you want to style for added lift and volume.”

Once set, Monae said she went back in and curled the ends of the longer twists with a Babyblliss Pro 1/2-inch curling iron for added texture.
