Textured hair guru Pekela Riley has just expanded her role with hair care brand MIZANI and we are so here for it. The master hairstylist has been giving us hair life with her work behind the manes of such celebs as Gabrielle Union, Teyonah Parris and Issa Rae, as well as her must-try True & Pure Texture hair extensions line catering to naturalistas.
With nearly 20 years in the game, Pekela is now adding creative director for MIZANI global imaging to her impressive resume of hair creations. Last month, the hair genius was tapped to create and oversee looks for the brand’s new global shoot on-location in South Africa.
T E X T U R E S H A P E : Cloud Nine; The feeling of accomplishment, satisfaction and gratitude. I’m still really too full in heart and mind to articulate the perseverance & magic of this week in #SouthAfrica. I can’t wait to share my texture stories, insights, inspirations for the #Mizani ‘s Global dossier. Just know that if you pray, prepare and push through, your visions can come to life!#creativedirector PekelaRileyonHair #doubletapforblackbeauty #SouthAfrica @mizaniusa @mizani_sa #textureaquadpro #btconeshot
“I was the creative director for the global images that you will see in all markets,” Pekela told Hype Hair. “They wanted my expertise in bridging the trends and being able to create a cohesive visual story from US to Africa.”
The new role is a natural progression of Pekela’s ongoing partnership with MIZANI, which has also included creating tutorials and product demos.
“I’ve had a great relationship with Mizani over the past four or five years,” she said. “I was also an artist on their previous global team and have even been a part of writing their texture-cutting curriculum.”
Known for her work with textures and shapes, she has also stepped into more education roles — having recently worked with MIZANI USA artists on editorial finishing.
“My role is an evolving one. I am educating as well as directing those trends with the rest of the global artists. I will be working with their pro artists on [such things as] refining texture, taking texture to the next level and developing an eye in texture aesthetics.”
