Rising star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is giving us pure life on Vogue UK‘s April cover. The actress delivers red velvet dreams in her first cover in a cut-out Valentino gown for the glossy’s retro cover shoot. The cover comes just ahead of today’s release of Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle In Time, where she plays Dr. Kate Murry, the mother to star Storm Reid’s character Meg Murry.
Gugu is flawless while rocking a pulled-up crop of wind-blown curls styled by Eugene Souleiman who serves as global creative director for Wella Professionals and a deep red pout courtesy of Hannah Murray.
Though dubbed as Britain’s breakout star, we’ve had our eyes on the award-winning actress since her starring roles in Belle and Beyond The Lights and we are so here for her newfound buzz. Inside her cover spread, she talks about working with Ava and Oprah Winfrey and the power of seeing people of color in film.
On playing Dido Elizabeth Belle in Belle:
“I didn’t really see how I could be in a period drama without playing a slave, necessarily, or a character in a very subservient or brutalised role. As a biracial woman born in the 1980s, if you let popular culture dictate it, you’d think mixed-race people were like a new thing. And that’s absolutely not the case. People of colour have existed throughout history – it’s just who has been able to tell the stories. And that to me became really important: to illuminate that.”
