Teen actress Daniella Perkins served up all sorts of curly girl goodness at the 2017 Nickelodeon HALO Awards. The 17-year-old Legendary Dudas star hit up the orange carpet in a crown of cascading curls and cornrows crafted by celebrity stylist and author Monae Everett. The on-trend look paired perfectly with her metallic mini and jersey jacket and mauve nude lip and rosy beat by makeup artist Billiegene.
We caught up with Monae backstage who shared the inspiration behind the look. “I saw Daniella’s natural hair and was immediately inspired to play up her curls and show how fun textured hair and braids can be,” said Monae. She also shared how we can recreate the look at home on any hair texture.
The key to healthy curls is protecting hair from heat while keeping it moisturized. To do that, Monae sectioned Daniella’s hair into four parts and applied small amounts of Mizani Miracle 25 Leave-in Treatment ($11.49), Bumble and Bumble Dry Oil ($34) and Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel ($26). Afterwards, she wrapped one-inch sections of her hair around her Hot Tools 3/4″ curling iron for approximately 30 seconds.
“To get long lasting curls, be sure to clip each curl in place and let cool before manipulating,” she said.
For the side braids, Monaé parted the right side of Daniella’s hair into two sections, from the center to just behind the ear, and braided two cornrows, securing with elastics. She then unclipped curls and set her hair with shine and holding sprays (try FHI Heat Stylus Shine Express Instant Shine Mist ($18) and Oribe Superfine Strong Hairspray ($38). To keep any frizz in check, Monaé finished off with IGK’s Laid-Back Defrizz and Anti-Static Spray.
