Actress Sydney Park has been on the rise since we first saw her on Disney’s That’s So Raven and is now snagging major roles in such series as AMC’s The Walking Dead and the YouTube Red series Lifeline, produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson which premiered last month. Sydney is also known for her role as Gabby Phillips, Tia Mowry’s daughter, on Nickelodeon’s Instant Mom.
Hype Hair recently caught up with this remarkable young woman to get the intel on her latest projects and the one hair must-have she swears by.
Hype Hair: What projects are you working on currently?
Sydney Park: I just wrapped my YouTube Red series, Lifeline. It’s a really cool sci-fi/ action thriller that will be coming out later this year. My character, Norah, is really kick-ass with a cool punk-rock exterior. It’s a role that my fans haven’t seen me play yet. I think you guys will really dig it! Also, for the past few years, I’ve been recording my DreamWorks Animation series Spirit: Riding Free. Episodes are available to watch on Netflix right now!
HH: How do you stay motivated in your career and your day-to-day life?
SP: Even when things get difficult, not only in my career but also in my life, I try my best to be optimistic. Whatever is meant for me will always be, and that is a mentality I’ve really grown accustomed to! I have my disappointments, of course, but what helps me overcome those obstacles is to allow myself to feel what I’m feeling, put things into perspective and move on. Sometimes it’s not that easy—but ultimately, I come out stronger as a person.
HH: Is your hair relaxed or natural? What is your daily regimen?
SP: I’ve actually never dyed or relaxed my hair. I try to keep it really healthy by using products such as Lush R&B hair moisturizer, gentle shampoos and conditioners and serums infused with natural oils. Exercising, getting enough sleep and having a healthy diet also work wonders for my hair! It grows superfast, stays shiny and doesn’t have a lot of breakage.
HH: Do you ever wear extensions, and if so, do you have any tips to share?
SP: I don’t wear extensions, mostly due to the fact that I have so much hair and it sometimes weighs down on me! All in all, it’s a good problem to have. I can’t complain!
HH: What are your favorite hair products?
SP: I swear by Lush R&B moisturizer…it works for all hair types. It’s amazing—my mom uses it, and she has a beautiful fro-hawk hairstyle. And if you can, purchase natural oils, such as marula oil or Shu Uemura Nourishing Protective Oil. Those products are fantastic!
HH: What are your favorite go-to hairstyles?
SP: I love a natural beachy-wave look with some bohemian braids. If I want my hair out of my face, I’ll go with French braids, cornrows or a messy bun!
HH: Are there any other celebrities’ hair you admire?
SP: Yes! I love big and natural hair like Tracee Ellis Ross and Solange Knowles have. I also really dig Lana Del Rey’s long and retro locks.
HH: How would you describe your fashion sense?
SP: I like to switch up my style daily, which makes it that much more fun! I’ll go from tomboy-chic to boho, then rock my All Saints leather with Frye boots. I keep it fun.
HH: When you’re short on time, how do you pull your look together?
SP: I always keep my eyebrows well groomed and my lips moisturized. Sometimes I like to use Bobbi Brown foundation sticks to cover any blemishes I might have. It’s nice for minimal cover- age and doesn’t clog your pores.
HH: How do you care for your skin? What products do you use?
SP: I’ve been using Proactiv for years now. Luckily, I’ve never had acne-prone skin, but it keeps my face superclean. I also love using manuka honey, which is harvested in Australia and New Zealand and helps with the suppleness of your skin — it’s great as a spot treatment and as a face mask! You can buy it at your local organic market or on Amazon. For a face and body scrub, I use the Frank Body coconut coffee scrub! It makes my skin baby-soft.
HH: What are your favorite color cosmetics?
SP: Bobbi Brown, Stila, Milk Makeup and Glossier have some of the best color products!
HH: What beauty advice can you share with our readers?
SP: Ladies and gents, less really IS more! I think the best way to achieve a “I woke up like this” look is to enhance what you naturally have. Take good care of your skin and bodyby drinking lots of water, exercising and eating leafy greens. And, of course, don’t forget to smile!
HH: What do you enjoy doing during your downtime?
SP: I’ve been a Bikram yogi for about three years now and it’s changed my life! I can break a good sweat while focusing on my flexibility and mental/spiritual health. You can also find me at the beach, reading, painting and writing.
HH: What is the source of your inspiration?
SP: My parents are my world. Their perseverance and the sacrifices they’ve made over the years to help me pursue my dreams always makes me want to be the best version of myself.
