Jennifer Lord has been creating hair magic since daycare, except now she’s no longer begging to play in her playmates’ hair. Ever since she discovered she could live off of her passion, she’s been taking the natural hair world by storm with her avant garde stylings and push toward self-love and acceptance through hair.
Today, the award-winning hairstylist and creative director’s work is hitting the stages of New York Fashion Week and featured in such publications as ESSENCE, American Salon, HuffPost, Allure and, of course, Hype Hair. She is also working on her first self-published coffee table book showcasing some of her favorite styles she’s created over the past 15 years.
After seeing the hair diva in action at NaturallyCurly’s NYFW Texture On The Runway presentation, we just had to shine a spotlight on her hair inspirations and must-haves, as well as some of her amazing work!
Hype Hair: So, you have to explain how you’ve been doing hair since daycare. How long have you actually been styling hair?
Jennifer Lord: My whole life! I have fond memories as a toddler at daycare begging to redo the other little girls twists and braids. Because she had a lot of hair, Barbie and I had a “Me and you must never part” relationship! I eventually moved up from the daycare salon to the big leagues and have been styling professionally for over 15 years.
HH: What inspired you to become a hair stylist?
JL: Hair was something I always did as a hobby. Once I discovered that doing what you love is the key to success I enrolled in cosmetology school and never looked back. Following my natural born passion and doing what I wanted feels like a dream. I’m traveling and seeing the world while challenging myself as a creative. Being a hair stylist gives you the power to create magic. When the look comes together, I feel like I’m back with my Barbie having the most fabulous time ever!
HH: As a naturalista, we see that textured hair is your thing. What kinds of styles do you like to create?
JL: I’m known for slaying all types of natural styles including locs and loose natural hair. I can do it with your own hair and added pieces. I think I’m most known for formal and over-the-top styles. I enjoy creating runway and high fashion show styles the most because they allow me more creative freedom and artistic expression.
