We’ve previously touted the major hair and beauty benefits of aloe vera and, now, a recent Instyle interview is adding more proof to why how this age-old remedy can be an effective treatment for stubborn breakouts.
Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, founder & director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and associate clinical professor, department of dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center explained, “Pure aloe vera gel has been used for thousands of years due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties. As an ingredient, it helps to calm and soothe the skin so it can be used with other more irritating products (anti-acne ingredients) to help off-set some of the inflammation.”
While Dr. Tanzi agreed that aloe vera can minimize redness, it shouldn’t be thought of as an equivalent to a spot treatment. In other words, it won’t be shrink your blemishes down in size. It will, however, help you heal recover faster from new blemishes and even help heal old acne scars. It’s also gentle enough for use on all skin types.
To use, simply apply 100% aloe vera gel directly to problem spots twice a day until healed.
