Fashion brand Torrid is making headlines after announcing that it will make its New York Fashion Week debut this September. While it’s not the first ever plus-size brand to walk the runway (according to Fashionista that would be Cabiria), the news is still a pretty big deal.
Full-figured — and average-sized women, for that matter — are all but invisible on fashion runways. With only an offering or two each year, Torrid will be helping to fill a major gap during the annual fashion week mecca with its trendy offerings ranging in size from 10 to 30. Their Spring 2018 collection preview will showcase season trends, including edgy rock ‘n’ roll, romantic boho, hand embroidery and painted elements.
“As a brand that is committed to helping all customers find her personal style, we at Torrid feel it is important to showcase the diversity of plus offerings on the most influential stage in fashion,” said Torrid CEO, Kay Hong in a recent statement. “Ultimately our objective is to show great fashion combined with body positivity and inclusivity.”
The fashion brand will also use the runway as a platform to highlight finalists from their third annual model search competition which is accepting submissions through August 13. The winner will be crowned the “Face of Torrid 2018” and receive a Torrid modeling contract and wardrobe.
Featuring model Candice Huffine as a judge along with celebrity makeup artist Priscilla Ona and live castings throughout the country, this showcase is looking to be one for the books.
