The natural hair community is mourning the loss of beauty blogger Tameka “Meechy Monroe” Moore. The 32-year-old passed away Thursday (Jun 27) after a nearly three-year battle with a rare type of brain cancer. Her sister, Vaughn Moore, shared the sad news on Instagram, with the caption “I am broken. Rest up sis.”
Meechy Monroe began her natural hair journey with her first big chop in 2009 following a hair cut gone wrong and gained a tremendous YouTube and Instagram following. She and her sister eventually became the faces of such brands as Huetiful and gained recognition in the US and Europe as the “Monroe Sisters”.
She big chopped again in 2014 prior to brain surgeries and radiation and chemotherapy and donated her hair to Locks of Love.
“It’s just a new journey for me,” she told the Chicago Tribune in a 2014 interview. “I’ve learned to be pretty confident in my skin. Chubby cheeks. Bald head. It’s beautiful. I have to show other women — no matter what, you’re still beautiful.”
The tumor went into remission 2015, but returned later that year.
Meechy died with her family by her side. A memorial service will be held Saturday July 8, at 11am at the House of Hope, located at 752 East 114th Street in Chicago.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones.
