Earlier this year, Dove announced a ground breaking partnership with television pioneer Shonda Rhimes to celebrate the beauty of real stories from real women. After sifting through thousands of applications, that partnership has officially come to life with their first film production featuring Fat Girls Dance founder Cathleen Meredith.
The three-minute film highlights the playwright and author’s journey towards body positivity after launching a year-long dance challenge that started as research for a book and turned into a worldwide movement. Now in week 37 (15 to go), she and group of women have committed themselves to learning new choreography every week for a year and posting their addicting one-take performances on her YouTube channel. (Watch one and you’re sure to find yourself binge-watching for the next hour).
Cathleen reveals how her perception of beauty has changed and how she relearned to love her self and her body through the challenge.
“I didn’t know that this was a love affair that I had been missing my entire life because I had always loved myself and always thought that Cathleen was dope. But, I didn’t think that Cathleen’s body was dope. And, if I could give that to every fat chick that I have ever met, than that would be worth it, because I don’t think we know how much we are told that there is something wrong here.”
