The Weeknd‘s matted and unruly locks had become his calling card. Whether you were just getting to know the I Can’t Feel My Face singer’s music or had been following him for years, you could spot him anywhere with his gravity defying locs and shaved sides. So, when his cut off his locs to reveal a cropped head of curls last September, social media went abuzz.
The reactions were all over the place, from pure delight to disgust, but one thing everybody wanted to know was why he cut them. Was it pressure to conform or was he just tired of them? In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, The Weeknd clears it all up: he just wanted to be comfortable.
“I could only sleep on one side of my face,” he said. “Now, the sleep is amazing. The shower is amazing, because I don’t have to spend two hours cleaning it. I didn’t know how much I wanted it until I did it.”
He also revealed that he did not want to be known for just his hair.
“It was a long time coming,” he said. “It didn’t feel right anymore…I told everybody I was getting rid of it, and everybody — literally, unanimously — they were like, ‘No, don’t do it! That’s your whole thing, that’s you.’ And the way they said that, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m definitely cutting it now.’”
