This morning, aspiring ballerinas and black girls everywhere were treated to the debut of Misty Copeland’s first official Barbie doll Good Morning America today. Copeland made history last year as the first African American principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre’s 75-year history and is continuing her dance in and around our hearts with her accomplishments.
The new Misty Copeland Barbie is designed after her likeness, dressed in a replica of Copeland’s Firebird costume she donned in her first principal role four years ago and is now reprising next month. Copeland said she worked to make the doll as realistic as possible, including body shape and features.
“I was hands on with making sure that she really looked like a dancer and looked like me,” she said on GMA. “She has muscles and calves and thighs and a bust. That was important to me.”
The Barbie also boasts a high bun topped off with a tulle headpiece, red lip and glitter eye makeup.
We’re loving this new Barbie, which serves as both a symbol of empowerment for young black and brown girls everywhere, as well as a celebration of the beauty of our different body types – especially for aspiring ballerinas who may not fit the “norm”. It is definitely our collector’s list.
The Misty Copeland Barbie retails for $29.95 and is on sale now via The Barbie Collection. Click through to watch the reveal on GMA and view detailed images of the lifelike doll.
