Owning your own Ava DuVernay Barbie Doll is now a real thing. The fans have spoken and the Oscar-nominated director and Mattel both announced Sunday that the #AvaBarbie will officially go on sale today.
— Ava DuVernay (@AVAETC) December 6, 2015
The doll was first introduced back in April as one of six “Shero” Barbies honoring real-life women and auctioned off in support of a charity of their choice. But, the filmmaker’s fans wanted their own and after a Twitter campaign, Mattel is producing a version of the inspirational doll just in time for the holidays. The doll features DuVernay’s likeness, including long twists (I guess they couldn’t quite recreate her locs) and a director’s chair with her name on it. All proceeds will benefit Color Of Change and WITNESS
This has been an incredible year for DuVernay, who is the first African-American woman to received an Academy Award nomination as director for Best Picture and continues to inspire and empower as a game changer with her choice of films, all while ‘repping for naturalistas and Compton.’
Mattel has not yet announced purchase or price details have not yet been announced, but we’ll be checking back in with details when announced.
The #AvaBarbie sold out 15 minutes after it went on sale. Sorry all, if you weren’t stalking social media you/me/we missed out! But I hope brands take note of our purchasing power. #JustSaying
