Supermodel Maria Borges and her teenie weenie afro (TWA) made hair history last night (Nov. 10) at the 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Though it was her third time hitting the runway as an angel, it was the first time ever that natural textured hair was rocked at the show. This means she was the first model to rock an afro with no weave, no wigs — not even extensions.
The 23-year-old beauty completely bucked Victoria’s Secret’s traditional beauty standards when she reached out to her agent to see if she could walk with her natural hair. “I was nervous,” said Borges, “but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”
And then she stunned on the runway in several looks, including a vibrant Carnival-esque look, as well as with a super-fringed crocheted midriff cover-up.
Via Instagram, she shared:
AFRICA, this one is for you! I LOVE YOU. Chère Afrique bien aimée… 🌍❣🌍 #MBmakinghistory#afrohair #bigwings #vsfashionshow#vsfs2015 #AFRICA
Who knew that wearing an afro in 2015 could still be so groundbreaking? I’m just glad that her presence is sure to empower and inspire a young girl somewhere doubting her own natural tresses and her beauty.
The 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2015 airs December 8 at 10pm EST on CBS.
