Celebrities are usually draped in the finest designer threads with flawless makeup and wind-blown luscious tresses to match, especially for a shoot. And Taraji P. Henson is no exception. The Empire actress plays a woman of many wigs, on and off-camera. But, Henson recently changed it up, slaying in a shoot while rocking her braided ‘do meant for under-the-wig wear.
Henson said the look was accidental. While trying on clothes for the CR Fashion Book shoot, her scarf slipped off of her head revealing the cornrows. Photographer Bruce Webber saw her braids and wanted to shoot her au naturale, Henson told CR Fashion Book:
“Part of me was like, No, no, no, NO! This is the hair no one is supposed to see. This is like behind-closed-doors hair. I feel naked. I feel like a plucked chicken…or a wet one. A baby chicken! But Bruce says to me, ‘It’s not about the hair, it’s your face.’ So I just decided to trust the artist’s vision. As an actress that’s what we do. We are vulnerable every time we put our art out there. Underneath that hair is my soul, and it’s me, it’s mine.”
Women often have the tendency to define beauty by the current state of our hair. By doing this photo shoot, Henson showed proved that you don’t need a head full of hair to be beautiful and in an Instagram post commended women who are “FREE AND BOLD enough to cut it ALL off.”
