Cover Story: Naturi Naughton Talks Hair, Music & ‘Power’

Naturi Naughton | Hype Hair
Hype Hair: Congratulations on ‘Power!’ It has been receiving a lot of attention and critical acclaim since it first started airing. Tell us about the concept of the show and the character you play for those who are just becoming familiar with it.
Naturi Naughton: I’m so excited about it! Essentially,”Power” is about Ghost St. Patrick, who is trying to transition from being a big-time, high-end drug dealer into a legitimate businessman by opening his own NYC nightclub. “Power” takes you on a journey as he struggles to live a double life and is not always sure what kind of power he would prefer to have. It’s gritty, sexy and authentic!

I play Tasha St. Patrick, the wife of Ghost, who’s played by Omari Hardwick. Tasha is from Queens, N.Y. and she definitely has an edgy side. She’s a ride-or-die, no B.S., street-smart woman. She helped Ghost build his empire, and she will do whatever it takes to keep her family together. Tasha knows that she can use her sex appeal and beauty as power in order to get what she wants, and trust me…she does!

HH: In what ways do you think this character differs from other roles you’ve played in the past?
NN: I love this role because it’s much more mature than any other character I’ve played. Tasha is young, but she’s a mother and a wife. That’s something I haven’t done. I’ve played sexy, strong characters, but never before have I had the complexities that Tasha has. She’s a good woman, but she can be a very bad girl sometimes [Laughs]. It’s been a lot of fun playing her!

HH: We love the versatility of the roles that you’ve played in your career, and we love your voice as well. Will we be hearing any new music from you in the future?
NN: Well, I hope to have more time to get into the studio and back to working on music. Music is my first love, and I will always be singing, no matter what. I actually do get the opportunity to sing in”Power”, and I’m always happy when I get to incorporate my musical background into my work on TV and in film. I love that our executive producer is the amazingly talented 50 Cent. I told 50, ‘Let’s get in the studio and make a hit!’ [Laughs] I’ve always been a fan.

HH: What are some of your favorite ways to experiment with your hair?
NN: I like to do braids. I wear a long weave sometimes or I wear my own hair in a short style. I’m open to trying different things; it all depends on how I’m feeling, but my favorite is my short haircut!

HH: What are your top hair care essentials?
ORS Olive Oil Nourishing Sheen Spray, HAIRepair Intense Moisture Crème, Mizani Strengthening Style Serum, Dark & Lovely Healthy-Gloss 5 Shea Moisture Relaxer kit and a wide tooth rake comb.
