From real to faux and high fashion to everyday ‘dos, dreadlocks have never been more popular or widespread than they are today. But, dreadlocks are more than a unique fashionable way to wear your hair. They are also very symbolic in history with roots that can be traced to the Rastafarians of Jamaica and, further, to Indian sages and yogis. And, just about everyone who’s ever grown their own locs, has a story to share.
That holds true for rapper Wiz Khalifa’s mom, Katie Wimbush. Affectionately referred to as Peachie, the charismatic mom and ‘glam-mother’ rocks deep cherry red dreadlocks that flow past her shoulders down to the middle of her back. She embraced the idea of natural hair eight years ago, and today her hair is healthy, happy and growing.
Peachie took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to chat with Hype Hair intern Paige Mitchell about her hair journey, go-to hair product and what she wears to keep up with her grandson, Bash.
Hype Hair: When did you first start your locs?
Peachie: I began my lock journey in 2007. After experimenting with every torturous hairstyle known to Western man, I decided to return to my natural hair. I sectioned my hair, twisted it up one Saturday night, and the rest is history.
HH: How do you maintain them?
Peachie: I maintained my hair myself in the beginning, but as it got longer I enlisted the help of a stylist, Ravin Bean. She is responsible for the color, and my fun favorite up do’s.
HH: What is your go-to product to keep your hair healthy?
Peachie: My top notch must-have beauty product is, Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Refresher Spray because it’s like the nectar from the moisture angels! It’s a hair lift mist miracle in a bottle.
