Taraji P. Henson is serving all sorts of glam on the cover of Allure’s July 2015 issue. For the Diana Ross-inspired shoot, Henson is draped in a Lurex chiffon dress by J. Mendel and larger-than-life curls, pink lip and radiant glow.
Inside, she shared her story of struggle and accomplishments and willingness to hustle:
“I come from a family of hard workers,” says the actress. During college, she did hair in her apartment between classes, charging $20 a head. “Oh, yeah, I knew how to hustle and make money. We used to do wet sets…. I bought a hooded dryer, and I had my box of rollers,” says Henson, who also taught herself to do nails. “I could have gone to jail; I had no license whatsoever. But it was just my friends. They were like, ‘Girl, hook me up.'” Occasionally, Henson still does her own nails. “If I get bored, I’ll put a full set on,” she says.
She also revealed important hair moments in her journey, ranging from a honey blonde ‘do she rocked when she won prom queen in high school (“I was blonde before Beyoncé”, she joked) to a choppy ‘do she attributed to a bad relationship (“I had broken up with a boyfriend and I had to cut all my hair off”).
