COVER STORY| Mielle’s Monique Rodriguez Gets ‘Rooted in the Holidays’

Monique Rodrigeuz

HYPE HAIR: We are so excited to have you on the cover again! How does it feel to grace the Hype Hair cover for a second time?

MONIQUE RODRIGUEZ: It feels great to be back on the cover of Hype Hair again! This publication has always been one that empowers Black women and the beauty that comes from their hair. It’s like coming home.

HH: Tying Black haircare into the holidays is such a great idea. How did the ‘Rooted in Holidays’ campaign come about?

MONIQUE: The ‘Rooted in the Holidays’ campaign is essentially a celebration of the roots that connect us and express who we truly are throughout the holiday season. The film producer of Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Lyn Sisson-Talbert, purposely crafted the hairstyles in the film to highlight the opulence and versatility of natural hair. So when Netflix approached us with this partnership, we worked together to develop a campaign that not only highlighted natural hair but executed that vision with the help of a Black-owned brand.

HH: The holidays are usually very hectic. How does family haircare play a role in your life during this crazy time of year?

MONIQUE: Haircare plays a major role for my girls and me year-round. But especially during the holidays. During the winter months, our haircare maintenance tends to be more extensive due to the increase in colder weather. So, in addition to finding new styles like the ones showcased in Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, our haircare regimen might include more hair masques and moisture-based products. A special piece of the ‘Rooted in the Holidays’ campaign will include our seven days of holiday hair challenge, where Mielle will release a new tutorial each week to achieve signature styles from the movie.

HH: What is your go-to hairstyle during the holidays?

MONIQUE: My go-to hairstyle for the holidays is a Flexi-rod set. You can never go wrong with this holiday classic.

HH: We’re all short on time during the holidays, and haircare seems to fall by the wayside. What advice would you offer readers who want to keep their hair healthy during this busy season?

MONIQUE: My advice for readers who want to keep their hair healthy during this busy season would be to make sure your hair retains a healthy amount of moisture. Dryer temperatures during the holidays can make it easier to suffer from breakage if you don’t have a consistent hair regimen in place. I would also advise them to take advantage of easy protective styles like the ones found throughout Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey.

HH: What are you hoping the audience will take away from Jingle Jangle and campaign

MONIQUE: I hope that the audience will not only make new holiday memories by watching Netflix’s first live-action musical with their family but be inspired to be their more authentic selves with their hair. In Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, it’s evident that the characters are unapologetically themselves from head to toe. The music, the dance moves, and the hairstyles all send a nod back to Black culture and how it’s the epicenter of familial bonds and values. Historically, we’ve been creatives and inventors that have overcome adversity time and time again. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey embodies those values in one movie. So I think it’s really special that people who watch this movie will walk away knowing that they have something sensational within themselves too.

HH: Does your family have any holiday traditions that you’re looking forward to participating in?MONIQUE: Yes! Traditionally, my family and I love to buy matching Christmas pajamas, watch holiday movies and bake cookies. This year we’ll be watching Netflix’s Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey on repeat, starting November 13.
