Whether they are a micro-influencer who has a fresh approach to caring for natural hair, or a sage vlogger who we’ve watched grow up online, beauty bloggers give us a new perspective on our beauty routine. While social media is full of those looking to be Insta-famous, there are a select few who rise above the pack. Get to know our latest pick for must-follow hair and beauty slay.

From the medical field to natural hair blogging, Kendra Kenshay—better known as MissKenK— has proven that following your dreams can be achievable. The popular YouTube vlogger stunned the natural hair community with a rod set that turned her into a social media sensation overnight.

“This video remains one of the most viewed videos on my channel today, and it has brought many of my subscribers,” she says. Now the mother of two is building on her passion for hair, beauty and fashion across multiple platforms and winning new followers along the way.

Hype Haircaught up with the influencer to learn about her journey and her next steps.

HYPE HAIR: What made you start blogging?
KENDRA KENSHAY: I started blogging six years ago on YouTube. I actually uploaded my first video on May 11, 2013. It’s really a funny story of how I got started. It wasn’t intentional at all. I decided to try my hand at being natural. So I took to YouTube just like everyone else to figure out how to style and care for my hair. I came across a video of a perm rod set and thought it was super cute, so I tried it on my hair. I loved it and decided to post my results on Instagram. I think this was a time where everyone had just learned about hashtags! So I tagged it #naturalhair. No big deal, right? I went to sleep and woke up to an abundance of likes, comments and follows. I had no idea what was happening. I began to get requests from people for a tutorial on how I achieved the style, and the rest is history.

HH: What was your career before you took this exciting path?
KENDRA:I was an Infectious Diseases Researcher at the University of Louisville for 10 years. It was an incredible experience. I learned so many valuable lessons and worked for a boss that always gave me the opportunity to do more. I use those valuable lessons and apply them to my own business practices today.

HH: How would you describe your signature style?
Hmm, that’s a hard one, because I’m always changing up my style. But I’d have to say a tapered haircut, a couple of parts, a killer fade and some color just about sums me up. I guess you can say I’m most known for my tapered hair because that’s how I’ve kept it for so long. Even before going natural, short hair has just been my thing.

HH: What do you think sets you apart from other aspiring influencers?
KENDRA:I think my hair is what draws people in, but my personality is what keeps people around and sets me apart. I remain true to myself. I am driven by my passions rather than money. I work with brands I believe in. Therefore, I don’t create content on just anything. It definitely has to be something that I use myself and will be helpful to my audience. I think in today’s world, everyone is so obsessed with going viral that they would do just about anything to achieve that. That’s not me. I just do me, and I think that’s why I’ve attracted the audience that I have now.

HH: What has been the hardest part of being a well-known blogger?
For the most part, being a blogger is not hard. Yes, it’s a lot of work and it takes time, patience, consistency and creativity; but at the end of the day, it’s a passion that I thoroughly enjoy. I think the pressures that social media can put on you can be difficult if you don’t know how to handle them. The pressure to always be available is one that I used to struggle with early on. I thought that I had to answer every email, DM or comment right away. It was exhausting because I’d receive tons of them on a daily basis. You ultimately want to be the person who your audience can get the answers to their questions but not at the expense of your sanity! So, I took a chill pill and scheduled days to address those questions.

HH: How does it feel to have thousands of followers relying on you for honest product reviews and tutorials?
It’s pretty awesome. I enjoy sharing my journey with my audience. I think they appreciate the content I bring them and the honesty and passion behind it all. I like to call my audience my friends because we share so many things together. Just as I am honest with them, they are honest with me and I love that!

HH: What are two of your favorite hair maintenance and styling products?
KENDRA: Before locking my hair, my favorite products were the African Pride Moisture Miracle line. The whole line provides so much moisture, and my hair loves them. My favorites are the shampoo, the Chocolate Conditioner, the Curling Cream, and the Pre Poo. Now that I have started the journey of locking my hair, I only use a clarifying shampoo and rose water.

HH: What are your professional goals for 2020?
Well, I have been working on a haircare line. This is something that I am very passionate about. I won’t go into much detail about it now, but definitely stay tuned. I want to continue to grow my marketing business, help more businesses grow, and create the ultimate marketing team.

HH: Has being a social media influencer been everything you’d hoped it would be?
KENDRA: It has been, and then some! It has brought so many amazing opportunities my way. From working with large brands to acting in my first movie to creating my own social media marketing business, it has definitely given me the platform to expand my horizons and do all the things I’ve ever wanted to do in life.
