Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has become a viral sensation over the past few weeks with her tough stance on social distancing coupled with her electrified afro and floor-grazing trousers.
She has been at the national forefront with her stay the f*ck at home messaging that has morphed into meme fodder along with her hair and wardrobe (which consists of a blazer and pants combo).
But, now her critics are big mad because this Black woman did the unthinkable during a global pandemic. She got a haircut.
Well, it was actually a “hair trim,” according to a stylist who, for some reason, thought it was a good idea to not only take a picture of the two standing side by side, but to actually post it.
Mayor Lightfoot, as usual, seems to give zero f*cks. “The woman who cut my hair had a mask and gloves on so we are, I am practicing what I’m preaching,” she told a reporter. “I’m the public face of this city. I’m on national media and I’m out in the public eye,” she added in response to a previous statement that getting roots done was not essential.
And for those, still questioning, she said, “I’m a person who, I take my personal hygiene very seriously. As I said, I felt like I needed to have a haircut,” Lightfoot said. “I’m not able to do that myself, so I got a haircut. You want to talk more about that?”
The point of contention is understandable. Barbershops and salons have been shut down as non-essential businesses in the midst of the city’s shelter-in-place orders. Millions of us are trying to figure out what to do next with our hair — including politicians who may or may not be practicing social distancing. And, in South Africa, folks are facing attempted murder charges for keeping their salons open.
But, I can also see Lightfoot’s side. With social media going ham on the mayor’s appearance as she has become a national figure working to protect her city and calling out racial injustices in how healthcare is being served, one can see why she wanted to do a little something, something.
What I don’t see is why her hairstylist posted the picture. I have so many questions. I would like to legitimately know who could tell the difference between her hair before and after? Do you think she’ll be collecting any hairstyling coins after businesses open back up? And, Mayor Lightfoot, was it really worth it to get this kind of attention right now? I mean, what if you actually caught the coronavirus from your hairstylist?
