Madam C.J. Walker has been a figure of Black folklore for more than 100 years, serving as both inspiration and motivation for many African Americans. The pioneer made history as America’s first self-made female millionaire and changed how we approached haircare.
Now, her hairstory is being celebrated in a new Netflix series, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, starring Octavia Spencer.
The Oscar award-winning actress plays the iconic figure in the four-part series which follows Walker’s journey from a poor childhood in the South to becoming a business icon with trailblazing products, inventions, and educational opportunities for Black women.
“She was a multi-faceted woman and she contributed so much, not only to Black culture but to our culture and society, as a whole,” said Octavia in a recent interview.
“I think she’s not only an example for young Black girls but young girls at large, because they too can aspire to that kind of greatness. Especially in such a misogynist time. It was a very difficult time for women, and she did not allow that to impede her process.”
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker premieres March 20 on Netflix March 20.
