New York Fashion Week is the beauty event that keeps on giving. The madness from a week of fashion designer presentations may be over, but we are still digging through all of the gorgeous hairstyles and beauty looks.

One look that is on our radar was a sleek chignon crafted for Serena Williams’ S by Serena Spring 2020 travel-inspired collection. Of course, anything coiffed by celeb hairstylist and TRESemme expert Ursula Stephen is going to give us life. But, the simple chic look also proves the slay is in the details.

We caught up with Ursula to get the inspo behind the look — and some key tips to create at home.

She shares that Serena wanted something simple, chic and sleek. “Almost wet looking,” she says. “Very Black Swan-esque.”

To get the sleek backdo, she says the blowout and flat iron “are key to nailing this look” — especially if you have tighter kinks and curls.

“If you have a looser texture then you can achieve this look with water and gel” and then brush the hair back into a sleek ponytail using TRESemmé TRES TWO Strong Hold Hair Gel.

Once secure, brush back and gel down any flyaways.

“To perfect the twist,” she says, “split the ponytail into two.” From there, twist each section around the ponytail base, pinning in to a bun as you go. Once finished, set with TRESemme’s Two Ultra Fine Mist hairspray.

The secret to achieving the wet look was her applicator brush. Instead of smoothing on the TRESemmé Smooth Dry Oil Spray and/or TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum with her hands, Ursula directed her team to paint it on top of the hair down into a sleek, shiny finish.
