As long as I can remember, I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with wearing weaves. My first experience rocking one was for my high school prom. My stylists recommended a quick weave instead of a traditional, full sew-in. It made sense. I had no intention of wearing straight hair and bob for more than a couple of weeks. So I did it and loved it until it was time to remove it.
Let’s just say that there was more glue than hair, and most of the hair that came out was my own! After that experience, I didn’t think about getting a weave again until I was working professionally. Those instances were far more positive for the most part. The only challenge I had was that my sew-ins cost a small fortune. It’s easy to drop $700 on decent bundles and an installation. Eventually, I gave it up to go natural. That is until I heard about the Mayvenn Install Hair + Service program.
The concept is simple: buy your bundles at Mayvenn Hair and get the installation free by a Mayvenn hairstylist. It seemed too good to be true, but I figured it was worth trying out. If you’ve been curious about this new program, here’s my experience.
I always considered Mayvenn Hair to be rather affordable for the quality. If you’re new to buying bundles, you can purchase the hair in bundle sets or by shopping a specific look from a gallery of photos. Most of the sets ranged from $230 to $350, depending on your choice of hair texture, the number of bundles needed, and whether you purchased a closure or not. I chose three bundles of 14-inch Brazilian Deep Wave for $284.40. This wasn’t a bad price for what I purchased, but I still couldn’t believe that was all I needed to spend on everything.
Once you buy the hair, you’re directed to a page to choose your stylist. Being based in the Atlanta area, there were more than enough professional hairstylists to choose from. Plus, Mayvenn allows you to see examples of each stylist’s work and how they’re rated by other clients. This makes it very easy to make an informed decision. I’ll admit, I was worried that I’d have to choose from a list of inexperienced stylists or professionals with bad reputations. However, the list was full of qualified, licensed pros. After tons of research, I chose Chanel Imaan of the Chanel Imaan Studio. Her weave styling looked seamless, her reviews were great and she seemed to run a professional establishment.
You should know that your service only covers the install. Washing, conditioning, or treating your own hair in advance are not included. With that said, I came with my bundles—which arrived promptly within four days of ordering—and clean hair that had been stretched for easy braiding. Chanel wasted no time getting to work. I decided to go with a mid-length, curly style with some leave-out. To ensure my hair looked as natural as possible, she also added some micro links near the parting space. The entire process took about three hours, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the look.
The Final Impression
I have to admit, it felt strange not to pay the stylist afterward, but Mayvenn had already compensated her, so our transaction was complete. All in all, I found the experience to be pretty seamless. My stylist did a phenomenal job, and my hair turned out beautifully for a fraction of what I had paid in the past.
If you’re looking to save some money but still have a stunning hairstyle, this program will be a great option for you. It’s not a fluke. There’s no catch. It’s real, so give it a try.
