Soul Singer KIRBY Is Giving Us Hair Life With This Retro Roller Set

KIRBY

We have a weakness for big voices with matching hair and soul singer KIRBY delivers on both fronts with the release of her first solo project Sis.

For those who don’t know, the Roc Nation artist has been in the industry for nearly a decade, penning songs for the likes of Beyoncé (“Die Without You”), Kanye West (“FourFiveSeconds”), and Ariana Grande (“Break Your Heart Right Back”).

Now, she’s delivering her own brand of vintage funk and hair goals in her new promos that have us rethinking our entire roller-set life.

The beauty serves queen vibes in the ’70s-inspired shoot while rocking a half-way done set of jumbo golden snap-on hair rollers. Many of us know the drama of nailing the perfect roller-set, so we had to reach out to her hairstylist Davontaé Washington to get deets on the inspo and how he nailed that look.

“KIRBY is a visionary,” Davontaé tells Hype Hair about their creative process. “She came up with the idea and sent me images. I just came through with the execution.”

But, he says, achieving the look on KIRBY’s lengthy natural tresses wasn’t as easy as it seems. For starters, yes, that’s her hair and she avoids heat.

“I basically was drying her hair on low heat to keep it smooth and give it that shine,” says Davontaé. “To get her hair smooth, I really had to stretch the hair out as much as possible.”

His pro tip was simple: grab your fave styling foam and light wax to smooth out the ends. “Start rolling sections at a high 90-degree angle to keep the rollers tight,” he says. “I over directed at the top so they would lay in front and not just on top of her head,” to gave her the perfect golden crown.
