While #OscarsSoWhite might make a comeback this year (only one Black person was nominated in an acting category this year), one Black AF did make it through with a nomination.

Matthew Cherry‘s Hair Love was among five films nominated for Best Animated Short by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The five-minute animated film is all about Black hair, telling the story of a Black father learning to do his daughter’s hair and the magic that ensues.

We were first introduced to the film back in 2017 when it was just a Kickstarter dream. Matthew wanted to celebrate and normalize the relationship Black fathers have with their daughters.

“People think Black men aren’t in their kids’ lives — so when people do see the videos, they look at these as an anomaly,” said Matthew in an interview.

It eventually got picked up by Pixar, making its theatrical debut alongside Angry Birds 2 last summer and now it’s officially Oscar-nominated.

Congratulations!
