Many Gabrielle Union fans and supporters are still trying to figure out how in the heck her hairstyles were “too Black” for “America’s Got Talent.” Unfortunately, we already know why. Black anything magic is far too often only celebrated on everyone but Black women.
Like our melanated skin and bodies, our kinky, curly, coily textures, abilities to quick-change, and our all-around confidence are often seen as intimidating, unprofessional or unkempt in Hollywood and beyond. Meanwhile, “boxer braids” and neon faux locs are all over the runways.
But, that’s cool. We recognize the foolishness and continue to make laws, strides — and noise — to shake things up. This current controversy has also inspired us to take a look back at all of the gorgeous looks coifed by her go-to hairstylist Larry Sims throughout the 18-episode season.
From Fulani cornrows and kinky-straight bobs to textured ponytails and Bantu knot faux hawks, click through to get into all of her Black hair magic.
