2019 is coming to a close and folks are making all sorts of resolutions while preparing for the holidays. But, healthy, flourishing hair shouldn’t have to wait until next year. Make it a now goal.
Ask any hairstylist, and they are sure to tell you the first step to healthy hair is a regimen. But, what should that regimen look like? We recently caught up with celeb stylist Kendall Dorsey — the hair magician behind creations on such hair divas as Solange, Justine Skye, and Yara Shahidi.
The former Oribe hair care educator shared some basics that we should all be following.
Keep it clean
“Having a good cleansing system is the first thing,” Kendall says. “This includes a shampoo, conditioner and mask.”
This should seem like a no-brainer, but some of us wait entirely too long between washes or aren’t paying attention to the entire wash process. Get on a schedule and don’t wait until your hair stinks or has layers upon layers of scalp build-up.

Moisture is the holy grail of any hair care regimen. But, Kendall says to make sure we’re not just focusing on our hair strands. “Make sure that your scalp is hydrated, as well,” he explains. “Use something like a tincture or oil drops on your scalp once or twice a week to make sure that you’re feeding the underlayer of the hair.”

Get a night routine
What you do at night is just as important as your morning routine. “Too many people skip this,” says Kendall. “Everybody, everything needs a resting phase to be able to properly work the following day.”
This includes the basics like “sleeping on a satin pillowcase, putting your hair up in a bonnet, or pin curling your hair,” he adds. “And this goes for any hair type. As long as you have that night routine, I feel like you’re setting yourself up for a great morning the next day.”
