Rihanna continues to up the ante on how we view Black beauty and fashion through her multiple beauty platforms. Not just with foundations, but with actually showing the multiple hues of ourselves in campaigns. With different body types. Of different ages. And, of course, with our different hair textures.
Her latest groundbreaking drop comes via her history-making FENTY fashion line. The line just released The Cameo collection featuring the profile of a beautiful Black woman with her hair in braided Bantu knots.
The hand-sculpted image is embossed onto oval-shaped black and ivory resins to create the different jeweled pieces, which are embellished with Swarovski crystals and pearls.
The image “honors a new contemporary heroine,” captioned FENTY in one post on Instagram.
Historically, cameos, have celebrated European women. Instead, everything about this collection is about Black beauty, including being shot from the lens of Black photographer Ruth Ossai and modeled by Black women.
For the campaign, Black women of all ages don couture takes on classic Black hairstyles coiffed by Issac Poleon while sporting the new jewelry and looks from FENTY collection.
Two models rock towering updos channeling 1990’s Chicago-style flair with swooping bangs. Another serves face in a sky-high kinky curly ponytail with eyebrow grazing bangs.
We are also treated to choppy pixie with mixed hair textures and blonde box braided and wrapped ponytails and striking makeup looks
“Disrupt the aesthetic,” captions one of the pics. Indeed.
View the full collection here, but be prepared to drop some coin. The collection retails from $340 (for the ring) up to $530 for the earrings.
