Missy Elliott did not come to play with us. Periodt. The music legend dropped a surprise EP Thursday night, Iconology, along with a new visual landscape that has us stuck on repeat.
The video for “Throw It Back” gives a nod to Missy’s signature out-of-this-world afro-futuristic flair (before it had a name), including a whole museum dedicated to her and her now-iconic looks. She also literally snatches our edges — at least her dancers’ — as they go from braided vixens to bald baddies while twerking it up in monochromatic suits.
But that’s just the beginning. Missy uses her braids as double dutch jump ropes and gives us bold AF pink and blue lippies paired with matching cornrows and grills. She also takes us to the moon in a dual nod to her shiny suit days and her collection of MTV Moonman awards.
The release comes days ahead of MTV Video Music Awards on Monday, where Missy will become the first female rapper to ever be honored with the Video Vanguard Award. The five-song collection also marks her first album in 14 years, outside of few songs and collabos with the likes of Lizzo, Kelly Rowland, and Ciara. It features production from her, her longtime collaborator Timbaland and Wili Hendrix.
Even the cover art for the new album featuring Missy’s name in braids is giving us life.
We are here for all of this. Press play below, but be sure to hold on to your edges.
Iconology is available now on all major platforms.
