Serena Williams continues her cover reign this month with a cover spot for Sports Illustrated. The tennis phenom shines on the glossy’s Fashionable Fifty issue sporting long, rooted waves and white bodysuit and coat with rounded tailcoat.
Inside, she talks about her passion for fashion — and making groundbreaking moves both on and off the court. She even studied fashion at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in the early 2000s while racking up championship after championship.
“My whole career has been about tennis and fashion,” she says.
“It wasn’t something that was done—like you can’t focus on two things,” she says. “But I really liked fashion and wanted to learn, and I didn’t want my career to stop.”
Remembering how her father once said she could not play tennis forever (“though I kind of have,” she jokes), she looks forward to expanding her fashion line, S by Serena, to include jewelry and beauty products. She’s also got a pretty impressive investment portfolio worth $10 million.
