While it can be difficult to take your career to the next level, celebrity hairstylist Nafisah Carter is proving determination and persistence can get you well on your way. Since stepping on the scene as a stylist at Rita Hazan Salon, she has quickly grown into a successful entrepreneur — including opening her own salon Nafisah’s Beauty Boutique in Raleigh, N.C.
Known for slaying the manes of Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez, this talented mogul has mastered the art of beauty. She has even leveled up by serving as the resident hairstylist for such events as Black Hair Australia, The BET Experience, Black Girls Rock! and many more. Now, that’s what we call international influence!
While Nafisah has become the poster child for success in the hair game, being able to give back is what makes it all worth it. And, she’s doing just that with her new book, Nafisah’s Hair Vendor Blueprint: A Digital E-Book Guide.
Hype Hair chatted with Nafisah about her new book, lessons she’s learned and inspiring hair entrepreneurs.
HYPE HAIR: Congratulations on your new e-book. How long have you been working on it?
NAFISAH CARTER: Thank you so much! I am so excited about Nafisah’s Hair Vendor Blueprint: A Digital E-Book Guide! It took me about two months to complete. I would stay up until 2, 3 in the morning writing it. Completing this e-book was so important to me because I wanted to help other entrepreneurs achieve success in the billion-dollar hair industry— finding the right reputable vendors is key!
HH: What was your biggest inspiration for influencing aspiring hair entrepreneurs?
NAFISAH: My biggest inspiration was definitely my clients. They would ask me how to successfully start their hair businesses—they didn’t know where to begin or what vendors are trusted. So, I knew that I had to share my blueprint of trusted hair vendors that I stand by—vendors that offer quality 100% virgin and raw hair that does not shed and tangle, takes amazingly well to color and is long-lasting.
HH: What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned as a celebrity hairstylist?
NAFISAH: The biggest lesson I have learned is to know your worth, and not to devalue yourself. Know your worth and charge for it. Sometimes people will try to get over on you, but it’s so important to stick to your pricing and know the value of your brand.
HH: We’ve seen a huge rise in female entrepreneurship in the hair industry. What is the most important piece of advice passed down to you that you would like to share with entrepreneurs looking to follow in your footsteps?
NAFISAH: Yes, so many women are soaring and bossing up! It is so empowering to see. An important piece of advice that I received from another female entrepreneur was to set goals, have a good work ethic and work hard. In this industry, like any other, you just can’t give up. You have to keep pushing forward and most importantly, believe in yourself.
HH: What other projects are you currently working on?
NAFISAH: I am so excited about Paris Fashion Week, as I will be out there slaying manes! I am also expanding into educational classes. I am now offering one-on-ones and very soon group classes, so I am excited about that! I will also be returning to Black Hair Australia in October, and I am really looking forward to it!
