“This style was very different from what we normally do,” her hairstylist Shornell McNeal told Hype Hair. “We wanted to do something playful and a little out of the box. It was also important to have a look that could be transformed in under 10 minutes to take Regina from the red carpet to the stage.

Want to recreate the look at home? First, invest in a good hair for ponytail extensions, recommends Shornell. Starting on freshly cleansed and conditioned hair, she flat-ironed Regina’s natural hair and brushed it back into a low ponytail.

Since Regina’s own tresses are natural, Shornell said the secret for maintaining a frizz-free look is utilizing a good holding spray (try: Dove Style + Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray) to set the ponytail base, she sprayed her hair and blow-dried to set.

“This helps to ensure your hair does not revert back to its naturally curly state [after] it is flat-ironed or blown out,” she said.

This is also Shornell’s secret for helping keep Regina’s hair healthy. “I limit the amount of heat that I use, so instead of flat-ironing her hair all the time, I blow dry it and use holding spray,” she said. “I use castor oil gel on her edges to maintain healthy edges.

For the ponytail, she added extensions, securing with hairpins and then wrapped wire around the hair for an “artsy” look.” To finish off, she sprayed on Dove Care Between Washes Invisible Dry Shampoo to take away a little of the shine.
