That’s why she is all about her 60-second rule, which she says has proven to transform skin and the way we care for it. Instead of speeding through your normal face wash routine, she says washing your face for at least 60 seconds allows the ingredients to penetrate the skin for better results.

“Makeup, dirt, and oil are a lot more difficult to remove from the skin most people realize,” Roberts-Smith tells Cosmopolitan. “So not only do you want to give the cleanser a chance to break down and dissolve products and grime, but taking 60 seconds also makes you pay attention to your skin and what you’re doing—like remembering to cleanse around the edges of your nose, under your chin, and around your hairline.”

So, next time you start your series of cleansing steps, take some extra time to show your skin some love. After all, what do you have to lose?
