Halima Aden is no stranger to making history — she was the first hijab-wearing model to sign with IMG, the first woman to wear a burkini in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant and the first to rock a hijab on several covers.
Now, the 21-year-old Somali-American model is making her latest first as the newest member of Sports Illustrated‘s Swimsuit Issue family. She is now the first model to cover the glossy in a hijab and burkini.
Sports Illustrated released the cover spread Monday for the annual issue in which she rocks three different custom burkinis.
Her breathtaking shots were lensed photographer Yu Tsai on Watuma Beach near her birth home in Kenya at the Kakuma Refugee Camp where she lived before coming to the U.S. at the age of seven.
In one look, she rocks a black burkini by No Ka’Oi and a multicolor style by Cynthia Rowley.
“This feature is proving that a fully covered hijab wearing model can confidently stand alongside a beautiful woman in a revealing bikini and together they can celebrate one another, cheer each other on, and champion each other’s successes,” said Halima in a statement.
The issue hits newsstands May 8.
