Ask The Experts: Dry Hair
Q: My hair is very dry and brittle, and I’m having trouble finding the right moisturizing products. Some of them just leave a greasy film on my hair and other products are simply too heavy. What am I doing wrong?

A:When choosing the proper products for the hair, it’s important to read the ingredients in the products. Be careful with how frequently you apply products that include waxes or other unnatural oils. Although they seal in moisture and protect the hair, they can weigh the hair down and leave it feeling greasy if you use too much. Products that include lighter oils such as olive oil, almond and coconut oils are lighter and healthier for the hair. Our editors recommend ApHogee Essential Oils for dry, damaged hair.

I am a licensed professional Hair Stylist of 25 years, the profession of hair seems to be going to the dawgs. There are so many women who are losing their hair temporarily and permanently and the reason is nothing but incorrect processing of chemical services. Clients are being told the cause of hair loss is everything from alopecia to bad water. First, Alopecia mean "baldness: hair loss", this is not a diagnosis. Clients are walking away with thinning, shedding, breaking damaged hair and are being told everything and anything as to the reason why. Essentially the clients are walking around in despair without any resolution to this HAIR LOSS EPIDEMIC. Every where you look in magazines, on T.V. in my city & yours, in malls, grocery stores, children and adults are losing their hair. The weave craz is out of control, sew ins as low as $25, I am sure many of these people offering sew ins at this price are unlicensed. But nobody seems to be concerned with the cause of all of this baldness in women and children. In the Chris Rock Movie, Good Hair, this proves my point. In that movie, he clearly went to where absolutely NOBODY KNOWS how to do chemical reconstruction. It was terrible, where ever those people are, I am sure EVERYBODY is BALD or balding at a rapid pace. I don't blame Chris Rock, but in the future Chris, you might need to do more homework making sure to show case truths in whatever topic you want to display. Absolutely every bit of this hair loss is due to INCORRECT CHEMICAL RECONSTRUCTION, people are processing hair chemicals and do not have a clue as to what they are doing. EVERY NEW client I see has DAMAGED hair as a result of someone processing chemical relaxers incorrectly. Clients are literally paying two times to have their hair damaged! Many clients are going natural because they think that the relaxer is the culprit for their hair loss when in fact it is the stylist. Clients think that NOW because they're natural, their hair is growing, when it was growing all the time, but because is was continually being damaged and made to fall out, the client thought their hair had stopped growing. But if you need a retouch, your hair must be growing otherwise, you wouldn't have any new growth. I don't want this post to be too long, but this is info you need to know. When you have bald patches on your scalp that are as smooth as your palms, you have been the victim of someone who doesn't understand the chemical reconstruction process and this hair loss is PERMANENT. When you stylist recommends that you buy Vit E & various other product to rub and massage into your scalp so that the hair will grow, s/he clearly doesn't understand the chemical process. If s/he did they would KNOW that bald spots that are smooth have NO hair follicles, where there are NO hair follicles, there will be NO Hair growth, hair will NEVER GROW back in those areas. You don't have to do anything to make your hair grow. God has already done that. Hair grows on the body where is should & doesn't grow where it shouldn't. When people lose their hair due to cancer, IT GROWS BACK. If you have had a bald spot for longer then it takes to get new growth under normal conditions, you have permanent hair loss. If you have parts in your hair wider then normal that's permanent hair loss due to INCORRECT chemical processing. There is absolutely no reason why clients can't wear chemical relaxers totally successfully. Ask the Expert. I am "M Expert The Stylist"

This answers to the questions on this blog are poorly written, barely researched, and contain both grammatical and spelling errors. When a patron of Hype Hair takes the time to go on this website and asks for Hype Hairs (professional ?) advice on how to care for their hair or seek a new stylist, they deserve a response other than "ask around" or use "Head and Shoulders or Doo Gro". The latter doesn't even specify which Head and Shoulders or Doo Gro product to use. Obviously there is some sponsorship here, which is fine, but then the answers should definitely be complete. Also, I recommend that Hype Hair actually use its own salon registry to answer consumer questions about where to find a salon. You have a list of salons! Instead of telling patrons to "Ask around" when they come to you for advice on how to find a salon (I am positive the patrons of your magazine and this website are intelligent enough to ask around PRIOR to seeking your advice), refer them to your lengthy list of salons! Black publications are struggling. Please take these tips to do better.

We recommend asking around, whether it is friends and co-workers or someone whose hairstyle you admire, for tips on places you can visit. Nothing is better than word of mouth for finding a great hair salon!

I now live in Columbus and am having a hard time finding a hair salon close to the Ohio State campus that doesn't charge like crazy...seeing that I am a college student. I tried Queen Bee's but they don't seem to specialize in healthy hair to me and my hair is very damaged now. Please tell me where to go because my once healthy luxurious hair is now short and broken off.
Hype Hair
We recommend talking to co-workers, classmates and anyone you can find in your area for recommendations for good salons in your area. It's always best to get an opinion from someone who is familiar with the salons and have frequented them. If they are satisfied with the service they ave received, have a consultation with the recommended stylist and never be afraid to voice exactly what you want done to your hair.

Though more and more natural hair care salons are cropping up all over the country, there are still some areas where the professionals in this specialty are scarce. Look for places in your area online or in the yellow pages. If you still don't have any luck, be very clear with your current stylist about how you want your hair to be styled. If you don't, under any circumstances, want yours or your daughters hair cut, she must comply with that. In the meantime, check out our Braids & Beauty section in this months Hype Hair for great tips on natural hair care!

I am a African American girl with very fine hair I have tried a number of products to get my hair to grow as well as to increase the thickness because I’m unable to maintain any type of styles so I usually wear it in a ponytail around the house but when I need to go out I were a wig I have been taking those Hairfinity vitamins they have made my hair growth but I am still battling the issue with the thickness one recommendation I was told was use Castro oil on my hair another recommendation I was told I can use pure hydrolyzed keratin I am sadly to say my two former hair stylist was no help their solution was to wear a cap or a sew-in I want to use techniques and products that will help my hair to growth strong and healthy do you have any suggestions.
Hype Hair
What you can do is try hairstyles that add texture and depth to your hair. Shampoo and condition your hair and then apply a little bit of your favorite leave in or hairdress for sheen. Part the hair in sections and apply braids to each section. Let your hair air dry and then release the braids. Finger comb the hair to loosen the wave pattern and rock a hot, textured look!

Back in December 2011 I got a color job to my shoulder length hair that went horribly wrong. Now in Oct 2011 my hair is in better shape but definitely not where I want it to be. I would like to get it cut to get rid of the damaged and colored hair, but I don't want to cut it all off. Any hair style ideas? Also what products can I use to boost my hair back into its luxurious and healthy state?
Hype Hair
Give your hair a rest from the ravages of heat styling by choosing protective styles like buns, ponytails, braids ect. You don't have to cut the length of your hair, but get it trimmed regularly to word off dry, brittle, split ends. In the meantime, deep condition your hair regularly with hydrating products from the Motions product line. We love their deep penetrating conditioner for color treated hair.

I want to go natural and cut all my perm off but what should i do first because im scared if my hair dont grow back what are some great tips and products to use when going natural this is my very first time and i dont want to mess myself up if u know what mean restarting over and still messing up on the new hair plz help
Hype Hair
To make you feel more comfortable, try growing the hair out to the length that you want it to be before cutting the perm out, that way, you have a good length to start with. Your hair will grow. Just keep it deep conditioned regularly. Try products by Mixed Chicks and Miss Jessie's for natural hair. Use a wide tooth comb to comb product through the hair and a good leave in conditioner between washes. PhytoSpecific has a great one.

Hype Hair
The best way to make her styles last longer is to protect her hair while she sleeps. Wrap her hair at night or have her sleep in a hair bonnet. Try Luster's Pink Oil Moisturizer to keep her hair moisturized daily.

I am a dark skinned person and I want to dye my hair completely red I have a cousin who is darker then me and she has that bright red and it looks gorgeous on her I just wan to know how I can do my hair the same way or is it best to go to a salon I have a semi pro dye in my hair now and my hair is red it's just that it not showing up good only if I am in the sun but I want that charlie balitmore red. any suggestions on what kind of dye to use I had use the VIA dye and I also use the bright red and ruby red please help me.
Hype Hair
I order for you to drastically alter the color of your natural hair, it would have to bleach it and have it recolored with the red tone. This process is best done by a professional hair stylist to get the best results.

So I grew my hair out with braids awhile ago, but then wanted a short cut so i cut it. And then I wanted it longer again but instead i got a weave. Its not a full one so some of my hair on top is out and the hair that is out has been breaking off, but i know the hair thats braided up is growing. I dont want to get braids again to grow out the sides and the front so what would be a different method to do so ?

Renee : Posted On: Jul 24, 2011
Is it possible to color and relax hair the same day? If so, what product should my stylist use? My former stylist used Revlon relaxer and jazzing mixed with something to cover the grey. My hair is soft and most of it is virgin (I've been growing out a relaxer with braids) and I'll be getting a pixie cut. Please advise.
Hype Hair
You should never relax and use permanent hair color on the same day. You can, however, go with a color rinse o the same day as relaxing.

What can I use on my daughter's hair? My 1 yr old daughter has a good grade of hair (curly, thick and dry) but when I put her hair in ponytails(loose) her scalp begins to break out by the end of the day. So I have to keep her hair in braids. Please help me.
Hype Hair
You may be pulling the ponytails too tight for her scalp. We recommend brushing the hair after applying a little water to it. Use small clips or barrettes to keep it in place.

To make blowouts last longer, wrap the hair at night. When combing the hair, use a wide tooth comb and apply a generous amount of conditioner to the hair before combing.

My scalp is very dry and itchy and I am noticing major breakage. I shampoo and condition my hair with Designline w/ tea tree at least once a week. My scalp has huge flakes and as I said I wash it at least once a week. I use an olive oil based hair cream. I am not sure what to. Usually I sport a razored mohawk but these days, I am ashamed to go the stylist as I just moved to a new area and unsure of what they may think or if the stylist would be able to manage my hair. My bestfriend was my stylist for 19years. Now I'm far far away. Please help
Hype Hair
Its best to use products are are geared specifically to Since you are dealing with dandruff, try a dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders to combat this problem.

I have stopped putting relaxers in my hair and just wash blow dry and flat iron but my hair really tangles up when i wash it and it is very nerve wrecking, i have a somewhat good grade of hair that is also color treated and past my shoulders. Any tips in maintaining it? The last relaxer I used was 3 years ago so it has been a pain, I sometimes want to relax it just so it will be more manageable but I do enjoy the fact that I don't have to.
Hype Hair
Natural hair thrives off of deep conditioning. The trick is to comb conditioner through the hair before shampooing. Comb in in starting from the ends and work your way up to the roots. This gets teh tangles out before you start the washing process. When shampooing natural hair, wash the hair in on uniform direction (meaning all the hair should be washed and rinsed straight back).Do not gather the hair on top of the head and wring it as you are washing it, as this causes natural hair to tangle up.

I'am a Haitian American sister who have a dream to become a Master hair stylist for people of color. I live in Walker, MN I became Unfranchise Owner for Market America because it's the only way out for me to pay off my old student loan so I can go to cosmetology school and seminars that support ethnic hair styles and products. I live around the Leech Lake Reservation and surround by native and white clientele however more African Americans or moving up here and people don't want to drive three and a half hours to Minneapolis just to get there hair done so there is a market for me up here. However how can i get more people to support my business so I can start going to cosmetology school now or at least let me go to nearby seminars? To explain Market America I'm a product brokager i match people to product specializing in Motives (Cosmetics). I teach people how to shop online using discount prices for big name retailers like Wal- Mart, Target, Ebay , and Gap just to name a few. Market America is partner up with 3,000 plus stores and still growing and it's the wave of the future. To check out more please go to www.marketamerica.com/shannahg My dream is to be elite hairstylist in Walker, MN to cater to the growing masses in Northern, MN because there is no salon up here that cater to ethnic hair. What's worse there is a black woman who own a hair salon in Bemidji and she only know how to do white people hair and not her own people. I took my mom to her and she mess up my mom hair. I feel like no matter where I live there should be a place to cater to women of color and I was very hurt and very angry. That sistah is catering to only white clientele not me I will cater to all Indian, black, white, jew to anyone not a select population. Hype Hair can you please help me to make my dream come true? I'm very passionate I don't want to just make a profit I want to grow and nature hair as well as relationships and I want to leave a legacy for all please help me. Thank You, Milund Mathieu

My daughter went natural this year and there is nothing i can do wit it.. wat do you sugguest for me to use on her hair, to bring the orgnial texrure back? help me please.. it's breaking off as well!!!
Hype Hair
Natural hair is beautiful, yet it requires a lot of extra care to stay healthy. It should be treated gently with a lot of TLC. Even the way you comb natural hair can make a world of difference in its care. Using small toothed combs are a no no for natural hair, as it will break the hair off very easily. Deep conditioning is also a major factor. Use a generous amount of conditioner in your daughters hair as well.A great one to try is Motions DPT conditioner. It is excellent for strengthening damaged hair.Always use a wide tooth comb starting from the ends. Work your way up to the roots. Try Hype Hair Rubber Thumb Grip Comb for tackling tangles. You can also try protein treatments for your daughter to help prevent breakage. Talk to a professional hairstylist that specializes in natural hair about these treatments.

A great conditioner is the pantene relaxed&natural breakage defense conditioning mask, it is thick and rich and excellent for color treated hair that is dry and brittle or over processed, relaxed hair that sheds.
