HH: What is your daily hair-care routine and what are your must-have products?
VG: Because I work out a lot, I wash my hair every two to four days. I try not to dry it out too much; I prefer cleansing conditioners or sulfate-free shampoo because of how often I wash my hair. I use Carol’s Daughter, Wen and ORS sulfate-free shampoos. When I lay my natural curls, I use ORS leave-in conditioning cream; and when I just let them be I use Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk. My cousin Dominique Milan cuts my hair. I think the way she cuts and lays it is unique. People often assume it’s some kind of finger wave; but you can run your fingers or a comb through it and it won’t mess up at all. It’s just my natural curls laid down. It’s so easy to do. Once my cousin cuts it, I just shape it, lay it and let it air-dry. Because it’s almost boy-short, it dries in 20 minutes or so.

HH: What are some top hair-care tips that you swear by?
VG: Let me say, I love Black hair, from 3A to 4C! It’s so beautiful! Because of our diversity in texture, I’ve learned what works for me may not work for someone else. I think the one universal rule for Black hair is: Don’t dry it out!

HH: Who are some of your favorite hair icons you look to for hairspiration from time to time?
VG: Hair icons who have inspired me are Josephine Baker, Toni Braxton and Jada Pinkett-Smith. I cut my hair in high school because I just loved their hair. I discovered then that short hair actually compliments my bone structure and features better than long hair does. I’ll grow it long here and there, but I always cut it again.

HH: What is your skincare routine?
VG: I use Clean and Clear Cream Cleanser and Clean and Clear moisturizer. I wash my face at least twice a day. I honestly try to not wear makeup if I’m not working. My skin loves to be free, so I try to go makeup-free as often as I can. That’s my number one beauty secret! Also, I drink a lot of water and wash my brushes after use. I stay away from too much salt and deep-fried foods, because they almost instantly break me out. I try to listen to my body and act accordingly.

HH: What are your top five must-have makeup products?
VG: My five must-have make-up products are Sephora brow pencil in Dark Charcoal, Laura Mercier mineral powder in Pure Honey (for light makeup days), Classic Great Lash Mascara by Maybelline, L’Oréal True Match Liquid Foundation (best match for my undertones), and Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado.
