Nicki Minaj is not one to take shorts from anyone, including the entire fashion industry. The music mogul and newly minted model just called out designers in a big way for their lack of diversity in fashion. Without naming names, she aimed cutting words toward an industry known for jacking trends without giving credit during an afterparty for Phillip Plein’s Spring/Supper 2018 showcase this past weekend.
“Thank you Philipp Plein for including our culture,” said Nicki, who lit up the stage with performances with 21 Savage and Rae Sremmurd. “Designers get really big and really rich off of our culture, and then you don’t see a motherfucker that look[s] anything like us in the front row half [of] the time. So let’s make some noise for Philipp Plein tonight.”
While the conversations around cultural appropriation or lack of brown and black beauties on the runway aren’t new, it is refreshing to see celebs like her stand up and stand out. This also isn’t the first time that Nicki has spoken up about cultural theft. She called out designer Giuseppe Zanotti back in February after he released a sneaker inspired by her, but denied requests to collaborate on an official collection.
“Just go on google, you’ll see all the different pairs he’s named after me. Lil black girl can inspire u but ain’t worth a collection my nig?,” Nicki wrote on Twitter. “Don’t care about the money. It’s just the disrespect,” she continued. “You’re not taking MY call? Lol. Give some money to charity in my name or smthn.”
While not naming any names, Nicki did address Giuseppe Zanotti’s usage of her name on his shoes, but failed to receive compensation for the gesture. “Just go on google, you’ll see all the different pairs he’s named after me,” she wrote back in February on Twitter.
