Hype Hair: We understand that you’re big on healthy hair. Can you share some of your top hair-care tips?
Jasmine Sanders: I use shampoo on my curls only once a month to clarify them. On other washdays I co- wash with a conditioning cleanser. My hair is low porosity, so although using warmer water is typically taboo, it works best for me. Also, I wash and add all products in the shower, detangling with a Denman brush; my hair gives the best results when I work with it soaking wet. A leave-in is crucial to keeping my hair moisturized with no frizz. When finished, I wrap it in a cotton T-shirt and go to sleep. In the morning, I remove the shirt and shake out—but don’t touch—my curls. When my hair is about 90 percent dry, I begin to scrunch it…and voilà—curls, curls and more curls!
HH: What products do you like to use for your curls?
Jasmine: I absolutely love Mixed Chicks! The brand has expanded the line and now has a co-wash and a curl sculptor that I cannot live without. For my leave-in, I opt for Curls Blueberry Bliss. The combo of these light- weight products gives me bouncy, elongated ringlets that last three to four days. For winter, I switch to Phillip B Mega Curl Enhancer. It’s highly moisturizing without being greasy or heavy.
HH: Who are some of your top hair inspirations?
Jasmine: Tracee Ellis Ross, Mo Knows Hair, Corrine Bailey Rae, Solange, Rihanna.
Hype Hair: What are some of the fun ways that you like to experiment with hairstyles?
Jasmine Sanders: I love big hair. So, on days when I’m feeling experimental, I’ll pick my curls out to a huge afro and spray in some highlights. I’ve even rocked the curly faux-hawk. I also straighten my hair every other month so that I can try different looks.
HH: What is your day-to-day beauty routine for work?
Jasmine: My beauty routine is fairly simple. I use a daily deep cleanser and weekly scrub by Dermalogica to keep my skin clean and clear. I use Natura Bisse Extreme as my moisturizer. It’s amazing! If your face is poppin,’ the rest is always easy [laughs]. I’m a jeans and T-shirt with heels—or dope sneaker—kinda girl. That way I keep it simple but sexy.
HH: What is your favorite way to glam it up for an after-work event, and what makeup products do you use?
Jasmine: For after-work events, I always wear heels. I’m a believer that a y heel can make any out t event-ready. As far as makeup, I go for Bobbi Brown, because I love a natural look. I skip foundation and use powder for a great finish. I love a deep-blue waterproof eyeliner topped with Dior Blackout mascara for long, thick lashes that don’t look clumpy. And if I’m really feeling myself, I add a pop of color to my lip with a great MAC color. Those lipsticks never disappoint.
HH: Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Jasmine: Do what makes you happy, personally and professionally. At the end of the day, you have just one life to live—and when you come to the end of it, you don’t want to have regrets. The older you get, the faster time will pass. So get busy living the life you want, rather than watching others, on TV or across the street, live theirs. Keep your inner child alive and hold on to that wonder about the world. It will keep you young in spirit and help fight off the blues that life throws your way. And finally, remember how beautiful you are and allow that light to shine.
