Miss USA winner Kára McCullough is Black, beautiful and brilliant. She is also super controversial. The HBCU graduate and nuclear scientist is making headlines for her remarks during last night’s competition on health care — saying she believes access is a “privilege”, not a right — and on feminism, opting instead for the term “equalist.”
However, she made one controversial move that had Black Twitter overjoyed: rocking her natural curls. The 25-year-old former Miss District of Columbia made the bold statement amongst a sea of sleek, straight looks from throughout the evening.
She revealed to Refinery29 that she was initially afraid to make the choice. “The inspiration came from hairdresser Albert Luiz and his salon in Sugarland, Texas. I didn’t know if people were going to accept it. If anyone was going to be receptive to it at all,” she said. In the end, however, she “decided to embrace what makes me feel comfortable and what makes me feel the best and brightest on stage, but also embrace what other people can relate to. That typical, traditional sleek hair with a big tease, not to say it’s gone out the window, but it’s transitioning a lot.”
In what seemed to be an almost kismet move, the former reigning Miss USA Deshauna Barber (also from DC) also wore her own tresses in an afro for her final walk to crown Kára as the new queen. The picture perfect moment was a testament to the beauty and diversity of our natural tresses.
And, as celebs continue to capitalize on opportunities to showcase their natural beauty, we look forward to day these statement-making moments are no longer news. Until then, shine on ladies!
