Solange pretty much gave all of us life this past Friday when she unleashed her latest musical offering, A Seat At The Table. The queen of cool girls dropped the perfect soundscape of good vibes, self-discovery and empowerment and all around black girl magic.

Of course, when I checked the playlist, the first tune I streamed was “Don’t Touch My Hair’, because, well, don’t touch my hair. With production by Produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and Raphael Saadiq, it conjured a light and moody, warm and soulful ’90s sound (think Janet Jackson’s If album) that you could both dance or chill to. Then the visuals dropped last night and I. wasn’t. ready.

Solange and her grown folks crew gave us four minutes of belonging without begging, justification or explanation. In addition to her perfectly colored beaded and shelled braids, her longtime stylist Nikki Nelms and team created the perfect hair palette to round out this unapologetic and timely celebration of self in the most politically unpolitical way.
