If you are anything like me, you have tested just about every makeup product on the back of your hand or forearm to try and find the right shade to match your skin-tone. I know this can become tiresome and frustrating, but finally there is an app here, Cocoa Swatches to help us find our perfect makeup shade – before we buy it.
After first launching a dedicated Instagram page, beauty blogger Ofunne Amaka created the free app for women of color to show how makeup products actually look on darker complexions.
The collection of images shared by beauty experts and aficionados allows users to not only search for a particular beauty product but to also discover new products.
Amaka said she was inspired to launch Cocoa Swatches by “a number of disappointing makeup purchases” where looked nothing like it did on the package on her.

“It’s frustrating to get excited about a certain lipstick shade only to find that it’s actually two to three shades lighter when applied to darker lips, or hear about a new foundation formula only to hear they don’t carry the formula in darker shades,” said Amaka in a recent interview with Allure. “These are very real issues that people deal with in the beauty industry, and I think Cocoa Swatches is a place where people feel comfortable speaking about these issues, and they know their needs will be addressed.”
