When you’re behind the hair (or should we say chair) of some of today’s hottest hair moments, you don’t always get the love you deserve. Especially if you’re not coifing our favorite celebs. But, just because you’re not styling Rihanna’s or Beyoncé’s hair, does not mean you are not slaying the hair game.

Our stylist spotlight series is recognizing licensed stylists all across the country who are creating crush-worthy manes in their own neighborhoods and beyond. Stylist Stephanie Anderson is one of those hair divas. She owns and creates hair looks at The Living Room Hair Lounge in Ferndale, Michigan and is also one of 10 winners of Voice of Hair’s 1st Annual Best Stylist contest.

Read on to find out more about Anderson, her signature hairstyles and see some of her hair creations.

How long have you been styling hair?
I have been styling hair consistently for 24 years.

What inspired you to become a hair stylist?
I worked as a cashier in the neighborhood beauty supply at the age of 19, watching the stylists come in everyday dressed so fly and carrying themselves with such confidence, passion and prosperity. It made me want to investigate the field. Years later, I learned I have several stylists in my family. I’m sure it’s in my DNA!

What’s your hair speciality? What style/styling techniques are you most known for?
I’m most known for my precision short cuts and attention to styling detail.

What kinds of styles do you enjoy creating most?
I totally enjoy doing short hair makeovers. Women totally change their outlook on life with a new fly haircut. Transformations are an instant boost of joy for me and the client.

Who’s your hairspiration? What celeb or person inspires you in the hair realm?
I really love Kim Handy (Khimandi), Najah Aziz of Like the River Salon, Tawny Thieu-Walker and Tabatha Coffey.
