Fresh off the heels of dropping her eight album, Code Red, last month, R&B icon Monica Brown has been slaying stages and appearances left and right with her vocal prowess. Now, the veteran is slaying the cover of UPTOWN’s latest issue in a dramatic black and white spread. In the shoot, her vibrant red hair hues she’s been rocking the past year flow dark and long in cascading curls and a side part styled by celeb hairstylist Ray Dodson and her face is countered to the gods by Marsha Saintil.

Inside, Brown reveals how she’s managed to maintain a successful career over the past 20 years, what brings her “unspeakable” joy and how she feels about being called an underdog.
“I know people have called me the underdog,” she said. “I was even told the kiss of death would be the four years I took off after the birth of my boys. I’ve executed my career exactly how I’ve wanted to and that’s the most important thing. And, if I am an underdog because I’ve chosen to put my family first, to be guided by my spirituality or allow true love to be my solace, then so be it.”
