When fashion magazine Modeliste Magazine used “red hot” to describe Zendaya, I’m quite clear they were not expecting it to be about her anger with them manipulating her body. In a shot from the spread, Zendaya is fitted in a black leather jacket and bikini and her naturally svelte body is edited down to what must be a size negative 2.
Zendaya and her family, of course, were not pleased, and had a good sit down with the magazine about her values. After which, the Disney star ook to Instagram yesterday (Oct. 21) to share a side-by-side of the photos and state her position on positive body image.
Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated. These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love.
The magazine later released a statement saying that ‘[w]hat one person may see as a “flaw” is someone else’s “fabulousness”’. We’re not quite sure how to take that, but we appreciate that they pulled the issue to make it right:
…Upon review of the final edited images which had been submitted to us by an independent editing company, together as a collaborative between myself, Zendaya and her parents, we concluded that the images had been retouched to an extent that was not acceptable and not true to the values and ideals we represent and promote in our publication I, therefore, made the executive decision to immediately pull the issue in order to have this rectified and have the images restored to their original, natural state which will reflect the true beauty and radiance of Zendaya. We look forward to sharing these shortly upon the issue’s re-release…
